28 Nov 14, 11:59 PM
Anya: She sat under the shade of a rather large tree in the courtyard, hoping the branches would block out the afternoon sun. The text she was reading on foreign relations had nothing to do with school, but Hogwarts was her only opportunity to read things like this.
29 Nov 14, 12:09 AM
Cameron: In squirrel form above, Cameron was admiring the view below him and thinking she had gotten much more firm since last year. Making up his mind to try for some more interacition, he changed branches to the other side of the tree, changed into human after checking to make sure none could see him, and then dropped onto the ground softly. Walking around the tree he said "Well now, hard at work studying?"
29 Nov 14, 12:12 AM
Anya: She had heard the thump when he hit the ground, and when he spoke she turned her head. "I would not say hard, no" she answered. "Just some light reading." She was wary of him, having heard many times over the stories of who he was.
29 Nov 14, 12:15 AM
Cameron: A glance at the book cover by bending his head and he whistled, though because of the book or the view it gave him of her form he didn't say. "Well I've been wanting to talk to you if this is an acceptable time. I was talking to one of your brothers yeterday in the dorm about your culture and I had a few questions I think you might know more about then he did..."
29 Nov 14, 12:19 AM
Anya: She arched a brow, but after a moment she closed the book, sat it next to her on the grass and met his eyes. "Why the sudden interest in Indian culture?" she asked. "Are you looking to impress someone?"
29 Nov 14, 12:20 AM
Cameron: he shook his head with an amiable grin and sat down not next to but in front of. "No, nothing like that. You brother was just talking about different cultures and I was interested. I want to see everything one day, so I know I'm going to do some traveling."
29 Nov 14, 12:27 AM
Anya: She pulled her legs underneath her and studied him. Handsome, she thought, but he obviously knew it, and that detracted some. "All right" she motioned that he should go ahead. "Ask away" If one of her brothers saw her, she could just tell them he was her partner on an assignment.
29 Nov 14, 12:30 AM
Cameron: he nodded, framing the thought sin his mind. "Is your family very traditional? I understand Indian culture has a lot of rules and women don't seem to have a lot of freedom o choice. Guy either. One of your brothers was saying his wife would be chosen for him?"
29 Nov 14, 12:36 AM
Anya: She was surprised by this line of conversation, but she nodded slowly. "It is true, my father will choose all of our spouses" she informed him. "My oldest brother's wife is already chosen. They held the ceremony during the winter holidays." She did not think much of her future sister-in-law. The woman was proper enough in front of her brother and the adults, but in private she was shallow, gossipy, and rude. With regard to women's rights she shrugged. "It is not very different from the old ways in England, though the clothing style is very different, it is true."
29 Nov 14, 12:39 AM
Cameron: As he had suspected. "Goodness, a bit too familiar to me. But if you will be married off, will a husband let yu have a career? Or do they frown on education with women there?" He kept hs face nothing more then curious. "I wonder at them letting you study before marriage if a potential suitor doesn't care for an educated wife."
29 Nov 14, 12:45 AM
Anya: These questions felt a little invasive, but there were very few foreign-born students at Hogwarts, so it wasn't as though he had many options. "It is doubtful" she answered. "Most men in my country see it as a woman's duty to mind the home and the children." She shrugged, "I will be forced to leave school at the end of this year when my brothers graduate" she stated matter of faactly. "I will study all I can until then." She gave him a half-smile. "We are taught very early to hide our emotions, and our intelligence if the case calls for it. If my husband prefers an uneducated wife, then he shall have one as far as he knows."
29 Nov 14, 12:49 AM
Cameron: Cameron actually frowned at her, finding this curious though he liked the sound of how much obedience she put in her words. It was not what he would have expected from her. "Seems a bit of a waste, if you have something you feel called to do. Do you? What if a woman does show a special talent, like being a witch. Doesn't that give you more options?" He wondered how bad her situation was, what she was stuck in and how interested she might be in being out of it...
29 Nov 14, 12:57 AM
Anya: His frown perplexed her, though she didn't ask him about it. She opened her mouth to answer that 'no, she had never expected to have a career' but then she stopped, closed her mouth, and thought about it a moment. "I.." She stopped, glanced around as though to make sure no one was near by. "I would like to be an author" she said softly. "I am very interested in cultural dynamics, and to be able to travel and study the situations of women, or even of families globally..." She sighed, "but it is not possible for me. No one my father would choose would ever allow it." .
29 Nov 14, 01:01 AM
Cameron: That crack was one he planned on widening, but first he'd better cover his tracks some more. "Ah, so he's only searching for traditionalists I see. Money and postion and lines." Typical, he thought. "Yeah I'd like to see everything. When I have freedom from my parents, I have a list which includes pretty much everywhere. I'll have enough money to do it and it's best done young, you know? But yeah, contracts suck. My parents will have me in one by the end of school."
29 Nov 14, 01:05 AM
Anya: She nodded, looking equally unimpressed. "My cousin and I have a wager on who will be sold off first, so far she is the favorite, but I will probably be contracted this year since I will be forced to leave school anyway." She tilted her head, looking surprised. "I thought contracts were outdated in this part of the world?" She looked confused. It intrigued her that he liked travel, she would not have expected them to have anything in common. Though, admittedly Anya's fascination had more to do with escaping the quickly closing walls waiting for her in India.
29 Nov 14, 01:12 AM
Cameron: He nodded at her words and then shook hi head at her. "Old family, pure, very wealthy. I'll never have to work if I don't want to. In exchange for everything though my finances are dependent on my having a child legally first. Unless I pick befor my brithday and have a child on the way, they will contract me to whoever they like. Same sort of thing except that I will have control afterwards." Seeing the thoughts had been planted he moved on. "So in your society obviously guys have the most power and political control. So a woman wouldn't be able to have as much freedom o movement as in our society where it's far more common. And a woman wouldn't be allowed access to families in a lot of cultures probably unless she seems to be obedient and her husband takes her there I suspect. A lot of those middle eastern and asian countries sound pretty restrictive on that sort of thing."
30 Mar 15, 11:05 PM
Anya: Unsure where he was going and wary because of it, she nonetheless nodded. "In India, it is referred to as being 'protective' she corrected. "I suppose it sounds better than controlling." The book lay temporarily forgotten. "Ideally one can hope for a man who isn't intimidated by intelligence, who is wise enough to appreciate a well-educated wife, but such things are not common, and money still talks more loudly than anything else. That is true."
30 Mar 15, 11:10 PM
Cameron: Cameron smirked visibly. "Protective. I think I will continue to say controlling cause that's what it looks like to me. Any time a culture marrys off kids at age twelve or so I'd say protective is no longer applicable." He met her eyes for a minute, clearly choosing his words carefully. "That would not be a problem with me. I would prefer a woman of high inteligence as I want my kids to have every advantage."
30 Mar 15, 11:13 PM
Anya: As much as her training said she should argue, the best she could manage was: "Child brides are only common in the more rural areas" weakly and with obvious irritation and the concept in her own right. Not one to circumvent things, she arched a brow at him. "Are you proposing or merely writing a book?"
30 Mar 15, 11:20 PM
Cameron: He nodded. "I think I had heard that, but rural in Europe would still get the aurors down on you here. It's not a point most of the world accepts." He arched a brow back, mirroring her. "More leaving it out there as a possibility. One never knows where one can find an advantage which can help them out of a messy situation. And in this case the advantage is clear that you can get to know me before making any decisions your parents need know about."
30 Mar 15, 11:24 PM
Anya: She didn't respond to his statements about the aurors, one didn't argue with the truth if they were smart. "Maybe, but I tend to think the odds of my father taking my opinion into account are...." She didn't even have to think about it. "Less than none. So unless you have a plan for appealing to a very traditional mind, I'm not sure there is an advantage" she pointed out. "Although it does make me wonder what is in it for you?"
30 Mar 15, 11:29 PM
Cameron: He shrugged. "Always important to find out first if something might be possible when two parties are involved before spending the time to think how to make it happen. I know my father would like my enthusiasm, so if I suggested a girl he would take it with a serious eye." He raised an eye at her, wondering how she could miss it. "For me? A wife used to a culture of male domination who is intelligent enough to know how to behave in front of others and yet still keep her spirits high in secret? One who knows when she has a good situation and will pay attention to keeping it?" He laughed softly and glanced around the area. "I suspect you can see my side of it rather wel lfrom there."
30 Mar 15, 11:34 PM
Anya: The more she listened, the more she understood. The more she understood, the more she began to consider it. "I suppose it could not hurt" she said finally. "To discuss our personalities and expectations if such a thing might be possible." She seemed to warm a fraction. "It would be nice to live on a different continent from the majority of my family" she admitted. "And even nicer to finish school."
30 Mar 15, 11:37 PM
Cameron: He shrugged again, aware he was making some serious points here. "Exactly. Nothing set in stone, just discussion. What's the harm in that?" A nod as he had much the same goals in some part. "And travel. Always good to get away. Although why your culture doesn't push education more I have no idea. I think it is very necessary."
30 Mar 15, 11:46 PM
Anya: "All right" she nodded. "So then where would you like to start?" Her eyes lit up at the mention of travel. "That is very true, or at least, I assume it is. I would like the chance to find out." She arched a brow, "because educating women might give them ideas about independence, and our societal structure could not handle those ideas."
30 Mar 15, 11:51 PM
Cameron: He thought about that a second. "Hmm, how close is your family? If you were living elsewhere, how often could I expect them to drop in on us?" A slight increase in his smile; she was biting hard on the travel part especially so it was good bait to keep actively wriggling. "Hey, my parents travelled, I know I want to see for myself rather then believe them on everything." He gestured to show it was a bad point. "Then it's a flawed system automatically if it can not stand change."
30 Mar 15, 11:57 PM
Anya: She considered the question. "I imagine not often given that I assume you live here?" She nodded agreement. "I have seen so little in my life, and I have always dreamed of seeing as much of the rest as possible." She bit her lip, seeming to battle with herself. After a few moments, she finally sighed. "You will get no arguments from me, about that at least" here she smiled. "You are...different than I might have thought from a distance." she observed
31 Mar 15, 12:01 AM
Cameron: "Well not in Scotland, London is where my parent's house is. Soon as I have a child of my own, I'll be on independent finances and can live wherever I want." Might as well slip that in there. "My father set up my inheritance to encourage me to have children quickly. Until I have my own child he can still interfere with my life and make me live at home. He's an @ss." A curious glance. "Why? What did you think? I'm curious..."
31 Mar 15, 12:08 AM
Anya: "Oh no, I Just meant here in Europe, not Scotland specifically" she clarified. "So my only chance at freedom is a marriage to the right person and yours depends on a child. It appears we have more in common than I imagined." Here she blushed, "Oh I...well..." She bit her lip, "I mean, you just..." She looked embarrassed, "you seem very..." she searched for the right word. "My parents would say worldly"
31 Mar 15, 12:12 AM
Cameron: He nodded, glad to see she didn't find the idea of early childbirth a problem. He had been right, her culture had gotten some things about obedience firm in her head. What an advantage! "Worldly? Is that another way of saying 'troublemaker?'" he said with a grin.
31 Mar 15, 12:14 AM
Anya: She laughed softly in spite of her embarrassment. "Something like that. It means someone who is more focused on themselves than what is going around them."
31 Mar 15, 12:22 AM
Cameron: He shook his head and grinned. "Oh I pay very close attention to what happens around me, other wise I wouldn't have noticed you of course." He winked, not mentioning the study of her profile had certainly gotten his interest up in having a longer type of relationship with her.
31 Mar 15, 12:28 AM
Anya: "I'm beginning to realize that" she told him wryly. She studied his eyes a moment. "Do you have siblings?" She wanted to know. "I cannot decide if you are an only child or not."
31 Mar 15, 12:31 AM
Cameron: Better she know it from the beginning he was alert to things happening. It would help her keep herself in check he was sure. "I am not a typical guy, a good thing to know off the bat." One eyebrow arched. "I have a sister. She has her first child already. Why?" However it raised a point in his mind. "What is the upper limit of kids you would want by the way?"
31 Mar 15, 12:37 AM
Anya: She listened, but it was clear she hadn't completely resigned herself to his being atypical just yet. "What is typical exactly?" she offered. "Because I imagine your typical and my typical are different." The mention of a sister surprised her, and the mention of a child even moreso. "An uncle already?" She was intrigued. "Older than you then?" She shrugged delicately, barely a motion of one shoulder. "You said it was good to get to know one another. "You have met both my brothers I think, and that is all there is." Her eyes widened , "upper-limit?" Though not confused by the question, it appeared the thought had never occurred to her. "I had never considered it really. Since I was resigned to marrying a man from my own culture, the accepted rule is that a woman has as many children as her husband wants or as she is physically able." Another moment of silence..."Seven" she answered. "It sounds like a good number."
31 Mar 15, 12:48 AM
Cameron: He held up his fingers and ticked them off as he went. "Sports, sex, acting like a child, no responsibility, growing up to be his father." He nodded to her comments about his being an uncle and smiled. "She married a Muslim man whose family has a big business running. They wanted to have an English connection so wanted their son to marry an english woman." He was mentally taken aback by the number, but as it was higher then he expected to negotiate for her covered that well and fast. "Perfect. We won't have any argument there then.I doubt I have to mention frequent sex would be something I want..." He smirked.
31 Mar 15, 12:54 AM
Anya: "Maybe not so different" she said before she could think about it, and then shut her mouth suddenly, eyes widening. She visibly shuddered, what she knew of the middle-east portrayed it as being worse for women then India. Her expression was obviously sympathetic. "I imagine that was an...adjustment" she said carefully. The sex comment didn't surprise her, but the thought of it being /her/ he was having sex with earned a blush. "Obviously" she tried to cover. "Can I assume given your opinion of marriage contracts that they would not be an issue for your own children?"
31 Mar 15, 12:59 AM
Cameron: A thoughtful look as she admitted the concept of guys might be the same or similar. "As far as I know they are both still adjusting. She seemed, neutral about it, not unhappy as the year has gone on." For the first time he frowned, not liking the thought his sister might conceal something like that from him. Her blush however brought the smiile back to his eyes. "Excellent. Seems we are not having too much in the way of disagreements so far." He shook his head. "My children won't be bartered off with contracts. If there is a good canidate I might encorage them to think about them, but I would never force them into that system." A hesitation. "How do you feel about housework? Could you manage a house or would you want servants or something?"
31 Mar 15, 01:04 AM
Anya: His concern for his sister was obvious, and it endeared him. "If your sister is anything like you, I doubt she would keep quiet if she were being mistreated" She felt a strange urge to comfort that felt foreign. She frowned, surprisingly they hadn't disagreed on much. Looking impressed, she smirked. "I could nearly be convinced to consider a contract on that statement alone" she was pleased and it was obvious. She arched a brow at his mention of housework. "Either, my family has some servants, mostly kitchen staff, so I am versed in both running a household and handling servants if necessary." She tilted her head, a small smile on her lips. "And I imagine magic makes things infinitely easier."
31 Mar 15, 01:09 AM
Cameron: "She'd better not, I'd feel betrayed by her if she did. And no one wants to see me that way." It was good she hear that too; he did have an edge hidden away, but not something to fear so much as be wary. "Different cultures again I think. I want my children to have advantages, not handicaps on their ability to handle the world." She sounded confident and he nodded, again pleased. "I wondered. If we had a more mobile household it would make things more complex with kids, but that would be something to worry about later I guess." He glanced at her again, longer this time. "So what do you think so far?"
31 Mar 15, 01:14 AM
Anya: She look up at him suddenly, her gaze going serious. "It seems we agree on that as well then, trust is very important." She didn't have to think too closely when he spoke to understand his meaning. "Children who are sheltered are at a definite disadvantage" she agreed. The question made her smirk. "I think you are either very good at getting what you want, or very well-versed in reading others." She shook her head, "seriously, what is the catch?"
31 Mar 15, 01:18 AM
Cameron: She picked up on another point of it and he simply nodded. Trust was going to be very important in this for certain. "Mine will be traveled too. I want them to understand more about the world then just one view. Having their mother from another culture will also help with that." Not to mention having an obedient wife would provide him with more reasons for trust at home. He smirked at her judgement. "Maybe I had to to get what little I have from my parents. So some of both." He raised an eyebrow again. "Catch? Why does there have to be a catch? Is it not possible you happen to be just the kind of woman I want and I happen to be interested in many freedoms you can't get with another person?""
31 Mar 15, 01:23 AM
Anya: It made sense, and so she wouldn't argue that point, but when he questioned her incredulity, she laughed. "Possible? Yes. Just, supremely unlikely. Most English pures in my experience tend to avoid mixing cultural bloodlines. I am sure there are exceptions, but I have not seen many."
31 Mar 15, 01:25 AM
Cameron: He raised a finger to her point. "Ah but there is no mixing here, it's an expanding of the gene pool so my family line has more options in the English pool. My parents didn't have a problem with that with my sister clearly. Marrying an English girl is just limiting myself I think."
31 Mar 15, 01:29 AM
Anya: "Maybe I ought to meet your sister and ask her if she thinks marrying you would be a good idea" her tone was almost teasing, "but then again I can only imagine what my brothers would say. " Something seemed to occur to her. "Speaking of that, you understand that nothing could happen until the contract was final? You mentioned sex earlier and I feel like I should warn you if you do not already know how poorly my brothers would react to finding out I had behaved unbecomingly." She wanted to roll her eyes, but she knew better. "I swear sometimes I can feel them watching me."
31 Mar 15, 01:33 AM
Cameron: He pursued his lips and then smiled after. "I'd like to think my sister would be more interrogating you to find out your dark side to warn me off," he chuckled. "Your brothers won't have anything to say since this will be contracts, something they can't accuse me of having pursued because your culture doesn't work that way." He smiled with satisfaction. "Oh I know. But since your family isn't big into education I expect them to do the contract before either of us has a chance to graduate. So I doubt the contract would be long in being completed." He reached out and picked up her hand, examinin the back of it for a moment. "Then by all means let's work towards removing their ability to make any changes or objections."
31 Mar 15, 01:38 AM
Anya: "Oh, hmm, maybe hold off on that then" but her lips twitched. "I do not have a dark side. Well, mostly.. My cousin and I sometimes hide in the kitchens at parties and make fun of the boys my father and uncle try to coerce into marrying us." She very nearly snorted, "oh I am sure they will have something to say, just nothing with bearing." That was a new thought, to be betrothed while still in school. "That is probably true, but would your parents not object?" When he picked up her hand, it startled her, but she did not pull away. Unaccustomed to be touched by men outside her family, she was unsure what to do. "I am not sure it will be as easy as you seem to think" she warned him. "My father is very strong in his opinions on things."
31 Mar 15, 01:51 AM
Cameron: His eyes smirked back. "And what would you have said about me you think?" He shook his head. "What, have my hash already settled? I doubt not my father has already showed my contract around to someone with a daughter." Her hands were soft and he could imagine good uses for them already. "I didn't say it would be easy, but with your knowledge about you father's business interests and his likes, it won't be hard to feed my father what he needs to make the right overtures to get his interests I would think."
31 Mar 15, 01:54 AM
Anya: "I am not certain. The only things I know about you are the rumors that I have heard in passing, and I do not really have time to pay attention to those things too closely." Her eyes became animated, sparked with something like genuine hope. "Oh, oh that is brilliant, and very true. I could give you the list and then you could..." One could nearly see the gears begin to turn more quickly by the second.
31 Mar 15, 01:57 AM
Cameron: Ah so she did not know his rep well. "See? With your help, I can set my father to working the particular he needs to and you may be married off before he realizes you might have had a hand in it. So yes, you do have some control over your future."
31 Mar 15, 02:02 AM
Anya: "Control" the word felt like an exhale, like a release of some great, pent up pressure inside her that flowed out all at once. "Just tell him to let me know" she seemed to be in awe at the very prospect of what was possible. "He can owl me if he needs to or I can give the information to you." She was less and less concerned with the details, this was so much better than she had hoped for.
31 Mar 15, 02:10 AM
Cameron: Seeing her interest in this and that he had hooked her good and proper, Cameron relaxed slightly. "Oh I think you should give that information to me so I can figure out the best presentation. My father will certainly be interested in the fact I might deliver to him a possible contracted girl and the tricks of her father's interests to save him the most effort possible." He'd be surprised if the old man didn't use that like a fox indeed!
Anya: She sat under the shade of a rather large tree in the courtyard, hoping the branches would block out the afternoon sun. The text she was reading on foreign relations had nothing to do with school, but Hogwarts was her only opportunity to read things like this.
