He could hear her missing his point, not that it was a huge point, but it was important. "But yes, up until that day you could still and you would have gained two years of protection for your family. But what do you mean war? I know Dumbledore and the Ministry seem to be on opposite sides against each other, but you think it's going to go on more then two years?" Taranis wasn't sure why anyone would claim Dumbledore as an enemy in the first place; Fudge was clearly off his rocker even with the whole Ministry behind him to use. He, like the majority of students, was only half-believing that Voldemort was back and not having been alive during the first war found it hard to credit. "Well I wasn't going to say it, but whoever you end up with, Rosalie, whether you want to or not might change their mind about letting you go. I mean, you are a catch. Smart, beautiful, and cool." He smiled at her, feeling his oats again for teasing her, though he did mean it this time. Clothing it in a joke made it harder for her to get upset with him about. And then she went after his next point, one which she clearly thought was nuts even if she could see herself being touchy at him. "No, I didn't mean a straight out reversal. But think about it. A girl finds out her parents have bought a guy's contract for marriage and she goes to school with him.""It's not hard to imagine her being hesitant about things nor I think would anyone think twice about arguments and a few words in corners. Then over time they get their differences straightened out and start getting used to the idea. More believable then instant close loves, you know?" She surprised him with the other half. So, there was more to this, she had to follow certain rules too? Interesting. "Oh. Content? Well hang on, Rosalie, but who else would you be able to fake that with to begin with? I don't remember what Henry's blood is, but is he a candidate?" He listened to her words, noting the tired signs in her eyes, seeing the droop in her mood. He knew she needed a break from all this. Taranis let his hands drop on either side of her where she still leaned back against him and caught up a hand lightly on each side. Giving a slight squeeze to both, he tried to sound encouraging. "Okay, well, tell me this, Rosalie, then I'll be quiet about it all. I can see you are tired of being stressed out. What can I do for you tonight to make you feel better, even if it's only for a little while? Back rub? Piggyback ride to the Kitchen for some hot chocolate? Tickle fight?"

“Be that as it may…” the words cut off mid-thought. Of course! That was why he didn’t understand her sense of urgency. She had forgotten that the DA was vastly more informed than the average student. She sighed, and pulled another piece of paper out of the pocket of her jeans, the letter from her uncle. Her first instinct had been to burn it, but once her emotions had calmed, it occurred to her that if she ever did decide to confide in someone, it would be better to have concrete evidence. While she knew Taranis would likely take her word, she also understood his skepticism, and they needed to be on the same page.
She handed him the piece of paper. “I got this not long after I got the list, Armand is my dad’s brother, one of the only members of my family to side against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." When he took the letter, she gestured to it, “that is the reason things are so complicated, and why Gran’s deadline is so important. If I reject her ideas, my uncle will blame my parents, and…well you can see why that isn’t good.”
She smiled briefly, recognizing his attempt to make her feel better. “Thank you Taran”, but then she shrugged, “then I guess I get married.” It was a testament to how much calmer she felt that she was able to sound so blasé. “I’m resigned to this, whatever the cost. Nothing is more important to me than my family, Taran, no love affair could be worth their safety and security. I will do what I have to do.” She gave him a sideway glance, made difficult by the way she was leaning. “And are your housemates, or anyone for that matter, going to believe your mother forced you to marry? A contract takes two families Taranis, what exactly would you tell your mother, and what’s more, will she be any happier about it than my parents?”
She nodded her agreement with his ideas , what he said made sense, she was just struggling to reconcile it with the position she found herself in. She told him as much, “you’re right, I’m just not certain how to make all the pieces fit, how to make it all workable, believable and safe.” She shook her head mournfully, “I don’t know if a way even exists.” She shook her head sadly, even though she hadn’t seen much of Henry lately, she’d still have given the whole thing a shot if it were possible. “He’s muggleborn”, she answered Taranis, “not exactly the prime candidate for faking a sense of proper pureblood behavior.”
Her head was beginning to hurt. She reached up to rub her temples. She swore he could read her mind a moment later. She smiled a genuine smile, he was a good friend, and she felt confident he would be that for a very long time, no matter what happened. She tapped her chin thoughtfully and then sent him a wicked grin, “can I have all three?” She glanced up in time to see the mermaid, peeking at them from the bottom of the frame with an angry expression. “I think you have a disgruntled audience Taran.”

Then she began speaking about a letter which was apparently important piece of the puzzle. He obeyed her wishes, reading, his eyebrows up in surprise by the end. "Whoa...that sounds more then just a rough time at work, Rosalie! Your parents work at the Ministry, right? They haven't been like, pushing for anything against the fanatics, have they?" To him the letter read as a death threat, not something he would have imagined in a student's hands and it made a little shiver run up his back. He could see her worries much better now, this was serious stuff, not that the mention of marriage wasn't serious to begin with. And he felt a pang over this as well as here he had been pushing her on points and she had been pushing back with good reasons. "Actually, she would be okay with it. It's still my choice with her, I think, but if I asked for it she'd do it. We're in a tight spot and if I'm right about what I need to ask her, then yeah she wouldn't hesitate if I asked.""Housemates, eh, that would be more difficult. They would have to deal with it, it is my life, but yeah I'd have to do some explaining about home. I think most of them will get it." Difficult indeed, but people would get it eventually, though most of the purebloods would get it first. He suspected his sisters would be the hardest to talk about it to. THAT would require an introduction. "Heh, mostly it would be my sisters who would demand explanations. They would want to meet their new big sister I think and find out all about her."But her request made him smile, though not about the mermaid. He turned and waved at her saying "Sorry! We'll leave you alone, promise. Come on, my Pretty Prefect, let's get you up then." He leaned forward and once she wasn't leaning on him, untangled his legs and squatted against the wall, his bag shifted over to his side. Hooking his arms he helped her get up on his back and stood carefully with a chuckle. "All right! Ready up there? Call out whenever you see ceiling beams swooping in..."They went to the kitchen in a most amusing adventure.

Rose nodded, “I’m not a Gryffindor for nothing”, she answered, “I got it from them.” She realized she wasn’t make much sense, and elaborated. “They’ve refused to sign any of the new ‘muggleborn diplomacy’ policies. Not to mention they’ve never been what one would consider traditional. They almost adopted a muggle boy last year, but they held off at the last minute when they realized it might be a bit hard for a non-magical person to adjust to our lifestyle.” She shook her head, “They would never tell me so, but I have a feeling they’ve been understating things a bit. I can’t be sure of course, but I think my uncle may have sent them something as well, it wouldn’t make much sense for him to be owling me otherwise, would it?”
She gave him a look as though she didn’t quite believe him, but then, she didn’t know his mother. Still, she wondered what kind of ‘tight spot’ they’d have to be in for his mother to agree to any form of serious commitment to a girl, even a whole family she’d never met. She wondered how much he was going to tell her, if indeed he planned on telling her the truth at all. The whole concept made her head spin, three or four different versions of the same story woven around the two of them.
She paled slightly at the reminder of his siblings. While she had female friends, she was generally vastly more comfortable with guys than girls, having grown up an only child with mostly male cousins. The idea of having younger siblings made her smile a bit, and suddenly the whole idea didn’t seem as foreboding. A foggy image surfaced in her mind, all bright eyes and happy faces. She knew she was being idealistic, but after all of the negativity of the last several days, she needed a moment or two of ignorant bliss. She obligingly climbed onto his back, laughing so hard she almost fell to the floor again, “don’t you let me fall Taranis Summerby, if I hit my head and get amnesia the first thing I’m going to remember is to kick your arse!” -Thread is finished-
